more reliable on, say, large diesel turbos. Ceramics are very flaw and edge sensitive, so high RPM applications induce high tensile stresses on the ceramic. Ceramics are very strong, but fail by brittle fracture in tension.
Spark plug insulators are also made from ceramic (not the type of structural ceramic one would use for a turbo application). If ceramic impeller production was up near ceramic spark plug production, I firmly believe the flaws could be overcome. Too bad Champion and NGK don't plan to make 2 million ceramic turbines a day.
